Second volume of Elkes lectures

The Elchanan and Miriam Elkes Memorial Lecture was established in 1991 in conjunction with the Elchanan Elkes Association for Intercommunity Understanding, as a series to be held in the University of Leicester under the auspices of the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies. The lectures are intended to throw light upon various aspects of the Holocaust, and while each lecture stands on its own they make collectively a substantial contribution to an understanding of these events.

A Child of Our Time by Ruth David

A contemporary of Anne Frank’s, Ruth David (née Oppenheimer) counts herself as one of the incredibly fortunate ones, for she survived.  A child in a large German Jewish family in the 1930s, Ruth experienced her family being tormented and persecuted before she was chosen as one of the 9000+ Jewish children to take part in the charitable ‘Kindertransport’ scheme, which provided those children with relative safety in Britain. In ‘A Child of Our Time’ Ruth relates first her memories of life as a Jewish child in Nazi Germany, and then her experiences as a refugee in the North of England during the war, from the age of ten.  The book concludes with a  description of  a reunion of the girls from Ruth’s refugee hostel almost fifty years later.

Essays in memory of Sergei Hackel, collected and edited by Faina Ianova

Father Sergei was a multifaceted person, and every facet of his personality shone with the talent his life embodied. One could write several books about this individual - the priest, the writer, the historian, the journalist, the artist in the western European sense of that word. This is the first work about him. It contains the memories of his colleagues, kindred spirits and friends, in which his own inimitable voice may also be discerned.
