YMWS was founded in 1967 with the aim of working with the poorest people in Kolkata to provide primary health care and primary education. One of the most inspiring scenes is that of the slum children studying in the YMWS schools, most of which take place at night because the children work in daylight hours. Work with the children has led to work with whole families and communities.
